Research Purpose:
In the present substudy of the GISSI-HF trial, we measured phospholipid N-3 PUFA at two time-points, at baseline and after three-month N-3 PUFA or placebo supplementation, to assess (1) their independent relation to patients'' dietary habits and to biomarkers of inflammatory, cardiac and metabolic function; (2) whether baseline concentrations of N-3 PUFA predict mortality in a fully adjusted multivariable model; and (3) the effects of supplementation of N-3 PUFA.
