NNNS: Hyperlipidemias (2011)

  • Intervention
    In adults, can saccharin be used to prevent and manage hyperlipidemias?
    • Conclusion

      Saccharin has no significant effect on lipid profile in short-term dietary intervention studies in adults. The evidence to determine whether saccharin can be used to prevent and manage hyperlipidemia is limited.

      The 2009 update did not find new studies meeting the inclusion criteria for this question; the Nutritive and Non-nutritive Sweeteners Workgroup (2009) reviewed and accepted this study identified by the Non-nutritive Sweeteners Workgroup (2006).

    • Grade: III
      • Grade I means there is Good/Strong evidence supporting the statement;
      • Grade II is Fair;
      • Grade III is Limited/Weak;
      • Grade IV is Expert Opinion Only;
      • Grade V is Not Assignable.
      • High (A) means we are very confident that the true effect lies close to that of the estimate of the effect;
      • Moderate (B) means we are moderately confident in the effect estimate;
      • Low (C) means our confidence in the effect estimate is limited;
      • Very Low (D) means we have very little confidence in the effect estimate.
      • Ungraded means a grade is not assignable.
    In children, can saccharin be used to prevent and manage hyperlipidemias?
    • Conclusion

      To date, no studies were identified to evaluate the effect of saccharin to prevent and manage hyperlipidemias in children.
